Methodology

How the list was made

  • Restricted to valid, non-expired registrations in the 50 states with plausible manufacture years.
  • Cross-joined all 50 states with all 11 FAA aircraft categories so zero combinations remain visible.
  • Calculated mean and median recorded age, share of the state fleet and within-category state rank.

Editorial use

What still needs checking

Use category-specific comparisons where possible; a state’s mix of helicopters, gliders and fixed-wing aircraft can materially change its overall age profile.
