Airport-access analysis
The communities furthest from a usable public runway
Every populated US municipality in the source matched to its nearest open, geocoded public fixed-wing airport with a qualifying runway.
Important: Straight-line distance is not road travel time. “Qualifying” here means an open public fixed-wing airport with a known non-water runway at least 800m long and 15m wide—not guaranteed suitability for every flight.

Methodology
How the list was made
- Included every populated US municipality with coordinates in the source.
- Matched each place to the nearest operational, geocoded public fixed-wing aerodrome with a qualifying runway using geographic distance.
- Selected the longest qualifying runway at the matched airport for the display.
